The Stevenage-Ingelheim-Autun Association
A tripartite visit takes place every year, usually in May, when one town hosts the other two towns for a three day visit. They invite thirty people from each visiting town to be the guests of the Association members staying in their own homes. We travel out on Thursday and return the following Monday. Our Mayor and Mayoress with senior Councillors and an Officer of the council who are the guests of the host town Council form a Civil Delegation.
Traditionally the weekend includes a formal Gala Dinner with two days of guided tours to places of interest. The third day is free for hosts to show guests their town and the surrounding areas whilst Sunday evening rounds off the visit with a farewell party.
At the Gala Dinner each year the "Pax Optima Rerum" Cup is presented to the Town which will host the next year's tripartite meeting. This cup was presented by the European Union in 1993 to mark thirty years of partnership by the three towns and for the contribution to further friendship between the people of Europe.
Past visits have been:-
The late afternoon of the 26th May are guests from Ingelheim and Autun arrived in Stevenage and where met by their hosts.
On Friday, an early start for the coach trip to Bury St Edmunds, where we enjoyed a guided tour of the town and a carvery lunch at Stales. Also free time for some shopping or sightseeing.
Saturday was free of organised events to let the hosts arrange activities for their guests. These ranged from a visit to the Royston, London and the Food and Drink Fair in Letchworth.
The traditional Gala Dinner was held at the Forum with dancing to Deja Vu. Dinner was served followed by the speeches and the Stevenage Mayor Cllr. John Lloyd presented the ''Pax Optima Reum'' Cup to Herr Ralf Klaus, Oberburgermeister of Ingelheim who will host the tripartite meeting in 2017.
Sunday was free time, followed by a farewell buffet supper at the Cromwell with a jazz band playing.
Monday morning at 8.00 am, after heartfelt good wishes had been exchanged with our friends, old and new, the coaches left on their way back to Ingelheim and Autun.
Just after midnight on the morning of Thursday, 28th May 2015, a coach with twenty two members set off for Autun. They arrived at the Town Hall just after 4.00 pm having enjoyed travelling through picturesque towns and countryside of “Le Morvan”, the country park near Autun. With their new or long standing friends they were taken to their hosts’ homes.
On Friday, an early start for the coach trip to Dijon for a guided tour of the City with its Cathedral and famous Mustard Shop. It was amazing just how many different flavoured types of mustard one can buy! Lunch followed before an afternoon free to explore and shop in the City.
Saturday was a day of free time with the families when our hosts took us to various places, many in Le Morvan. The traditional gala evening opened with a live tableau from the show “The Quest for Peace” by a dance troupe before the usual speeches by the Mayors and Oberburgermeister when gifts were exchanged and the Pax Optima Rerum Cup was passed to the Stevenage Mayor for safe keeping until our next meeting in 2016. A wonderful dinner was then served followed by dancing.
Sunday was relaxed with guided tours of the Saint-Lazare Cathedral and the Rolin Museum for those who wanted them followed by lunch with the hosts. Many of these were barbecues arranged with our hosts’ friends to meet us. That evening a farewell buffet supper was enjoyed with a jazz band playing.
Monday morning at 8.00 am, after heartfelt good wishes had been exchanged with our friends, old and new, the coaches left on their way back to Ingelheim and Stevenage.
